Haulage Road Safety This Winter

With temperatures plummeting this week it’s important to make sure deliveries are made safely and on time. We’ve put together some tips to make sure you arrive safely and that the impact on your service is as little as possible.

Read the reports:

Keeping up to date with weather reports relating to your route means you can plan your travel time correctly and also have backup routes in case things change unexpectedly.

Get your vehicles winter ready:

Make sure that your fleet is clear of ice and snow as much as possible. You want to make sure your drivers can see where they’re going – and that others can easily see them!

Slow it down where possible:

Driving on ice is estimated to take ten times as long for HGV drivers as it is for any other vehicle in winter. It is also important for HGV drivers to keep in mind that if their loads are heavy, they will need even more time to stop safely.

See the light:

Lack of visibility and cold conditions go hand in hand. Snow, fog and even wind can make it difficult to see when on the road. Give yourself extra time to check for signage that may be obscured by the weather to make sure you’re on the right track.

Don’t overdo it:

Demand always seems to increase over Christmas, but if you overpromise and set unrealistic expectations, you can often set yourself, and your customers, way back. Review the situation and make a carefully considered plan to get your job done and on time.
